What Should We Do When God Feels Far Away?
Have you ever prayed and wondered if God was really listening? Maybe you’ve asked Him for help with the same situation over and over, but nothing seems to change. Maybe you once felt close to Him, but lately He seems distant. Or maybe life has become so difficult that you’ve found yourself wondering, “God, where are You?”
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone. Some of the most faithful people in the Bible had moments when God seemed far away. David cried out in Psalm 13: “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” David loved God, yet he still experienced times when he couldn’t feel God’s presence. His honesty reminds us that we don’t have to pretend with God. We can tell Him when we’re afraid, disappointed, confused, or even angry.
The good news is, God’s presence doesn’t depend on whether or not we can feel it. The Bible tells us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). Sometimes the very moments when God seems farthest away are the moments when we need to hold most tightly to what He has promised.
Recently, someone reached out to Love INC during a difficult season. There wasn’t an easy solution to everything this person was facing, but sometimes helping begins simply by listening, reminding someone that they’re not alone, and praying together. That’s something all of us can do when God feels distant.
Here are some other things to keep in mind:
1) Keep talking to Him. Your prayers don’t have to be eloquent. Tell God exactly how you feel.
2) Keep returning to His Word. When our emotions tell us God has forgotten us, Scripture reminds us of what is true.
3) Let other people walk beside you. God often shows His love through His people.
Always remember, regardless of how we feel, God is not absent. You may not understand what God is doing right now, but He has not forgotten you. God promises, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). When you can’t see what God is doing, you can still hold on to who He is.
A Prayer for This Week:
Lord, sometimes You feel far away, especially when life is difficult and our prayers seem unanswered. Help us remember that You are with us even when we cannot feel Your presence. Give us strength for today, hope for tomorrow, and faith to keep trusting You while we wait. Remind us that we never have to walk through our struggles alone. Amen.
